    Bill Porter writes:

I live in California and often take a look at your blog. I love to read it and follow your family’s antics. I wish I lived a bit nearer and then I’d enter your competitions!

Mrs Jill Saunders of Bispham Road says:

It’s good to see shops reopening on Wesley Street. Graham Eyes butchers has opened after a five month closure due to the terrible traffic problems in that area. He is so helpful and his meat is delicious. I wish him well.

I totally agree with Susan Jones. What is Southport coming to? I thought we were a tourist resort but now we have a beach that’s covered in grass and weeds and no pleasure beach. Soon there’ll be a water attraction at Dunes, which no-one will see because no-one will be in that part of town. Add to that the disgraceful roadworks all over Chapel Street and we may as well write the town off altogether.

I had to write, to express my dismay at the closure of Pleasureland. For a seaside town that caters for families, we don’t have a lot to offer nowadays. A seaside town with no childrens hospital and now no fair. It really is so sad.

We’ve just been for a walk by the side of the Marine Lake, stopping for a coffee at the lakeside cafe. It’s an absolute disgrace. While two men chatted and sat behind the counter, too lazy to even stand up to serve, the picnic tables where people are meant to sit, were surrounded by litter, cigarette ends and bits of stale food. Two rats ran past our feet. The hanging baskets were empty and broken. What a great way to attract visitors to our town.

After reading your diary entry about the sea being frolicksome, I asked my daughter what it meant. “Well mum, replied Emily”, “The last time I was on a boat and it said that, I was sick.” Saying that she was in the Irish sea!

It`s good that you enjoyed your holiday.

I would like to congratulate you on your column: How nice to have a local ‘notice-board’ where we may also interact with like, and opposite, minds.

I keep hearing about cars being broken into in the Pinewoods carpark at Freshfield. Surely it would be possible to have CCTV cameras in operation there and nail the culprits once and for all. The cowardly thieves must be having a really good laugh at the expense of law-abiding people.

About time too – a website for normal people! Me and my friends LOVE your site. Especially the competitions. Could we have more reader recommendations as they really help when we go shopping.

I’ve lived in Southport all my life (63 years) and can remember many happy days playing with a bucket and spade on the beach as a child.

I’m truly disgusted by the state of the beach today, in fact the stretch between Weld Road and the Pleasure Beach cannot be referred to as a beach any longer. It’s just a marsh. What must visitors to the town think?

And please don’t tell me that Southport isn’t a tourist resort any longer. If that was the case our hotels wouldn’t survive.

It’s just sheer laziness on the part of the Council which they try to justify by talking about bird life and nature reserves. The situation is so bad now that to remove all the weeds and grasses would cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Perhaps this is an election issue. Let the parties tell us what they plan to do with our beaches and then we can decide who to vote for.

And by the way, I’m pleased that the people of Southport and Formby have this vehicle to air their views – well done debsdigest.

In response to the letter on your website from Mr George of Southport, although I agree with his comments about the weeds on the beach at Birkdale, I wonder how many families would actually use this part of the beach even if it was cleared. There are no facilities such as toilets that you need for a day out at the beach.

There’s one thing, the man in the cabin who is there to take money from drivers, will soon be out of a job because no-one at all will be able to use this stretch once it has become a marsh. If people want a decent beach they’ll have to come to Freshfield and Formby.

    Good wishes from Toronto

Hi, I’ve been visiting your site regularly but haven’t emailed before because it seemed to be a local site. Now I see you’ve “gone global”. That’s great. I’m also a Mum of three, I live in Toronto and really relate to things you say about your family. My children have all flown the nest and although I miss them like crazy, I’m finding all kinds of new pastimes. I sew, embroider, do cross stitch and find time for pilates and yoga every day. I’ll continue to read you entertaining diary with interest.

    Best wishes

Regarding the beaches. We’ve just moved back up north to Freshfield from Sidmouth in Devon and beaches get dirty everywhere. Great to have sandy beaches instead of shingle. Feel that Sefton’s beaches well kept but we were shocked at how some are full of rubbish. Walked on the one near Alexandra road in Formby at weekend and will stick to Freshfield and Ainsdale from now on. People are very lucky to have nature reserves, beaches, woods etc.
